On Friday, November 1, 2019, the Honorable Pamela Pepper became chief judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Judge Pepper is the first woman to serve as chief judge in the District. She was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate in 2014. Chief Judge Pepper’s predecessor, William C. Griesbach, completed his seven-year term the previous day. The position of chief judge is based on seniority and other factors, as set forth in 28 U.S.C. § 136.
